Agreed, I'd tend to focus on the Bear, with an extra skill point to add a health, rather than unlocking the Drake immediately, but once you level up, and have points to throw around, the Drake is great fun.

Thanks Jeffrey for the table. It's something that had to be done. The bear and the drake seems to be the best choices here. It depends why you need your summon. I mostly use a summon as a punching bag if one of my teammates dies. In that case the bear is my best option. Tho the drake will attack much more often (not tested yet, but with 7+ or so in AGI, it should).

When considering which summon to choose, consider the following; If you were to go through the tree to get a bronto, for example, you could have just invested the 3 extra points needed to get a bronto in a spider instead. This would increase the spider's stats by 30%. The quest is, does this make the spider better than a lv1 bronto? The answer is no. I made a table of the stats of all creatures at all levels compared to one another at similar skill point investments. It can be found here -- http://i.imgur.com/DepmW.png

Summary:
The SPIDER's stats suck and it has no redeeming features.
The WOLFhas the highest agi of all summons at similar skill point levels, but that's about it.
The HALLA is a good choice, as thought it doesn't excel in any stat excep lck, it doesn't suck in any stat either. It also only costs 1 mana to summon if you're cheap.
The BEAR is a great choice. It has the most hp, atk, and def of any summon. It falls short in agi and lck, but who needs those?
The BRONTO sucks. There is no reason to choose the bronto.
The DRAKE is pretty decent. It has good stats, second to only the bear, though it's agi and lck are higher than the bear's to compensate. It also costs 3 mana.

I say the bear is the clear winner here, but you can make your own decisions based on this table, which is accurate to within a +-1 point margin of error due to rounding of stats.

I just noticed today (4/29/2011) that each point added to a summon raises it's statistics +10% (as well as health by 1). So that is a great addition.
